Close Enough

September 29, 2008
I was just tinkering with this painting I did of myself for the AFG (Austin Figurative Gallery) Self-Portrait Show this past Saturday night. Naturally everything is just a little off (since I don't use a grid or any accurate measurement technique, I just wing it by eyeballing), but I think I got myself darn close for about maybe 10 hours' work. This is much tighter than I like to paint lately but I'm still coming to grips with the details of my own features so it was hard to be loose. 20" x 16" oil on canvas, nfs.

I looked at the larger version on your other site. I like being able to see larger pics. This is very good, I wonder , how does the color compare to the real thing? Well Done. bd

I wish I knew how to get these pictures to enlarge when you click on them -- not sure how at this point. The color is close but a little grayer/cooler than in person I'd say. Thanks, glad you like. Thank goodness these self-portrait shows are only twice a year. This is my 4th one, maybe my last! :)

Camille, nicely done! I think it's the most difficult genre of all to paint. I have tried many times, and am never pleased with the outcome. You made me feel like I could do this. It's a goal for 09. Thanks for sharing it. Your fun-loving character must be showing through, because I detect one in your painting.

Pattie - you obviously could do a self-portrait well after I saw your beautiful one you did in this last KJ challenge. It helped me to just put the picture reference on my computer instead of trying to paint myself from a mirror, since your head angle changes constantly even if you try to get the same exact position. And yes, I do like fun! Too much I'm afraid :)

Beth - I'm glad you like it and thank you for the kind words! And I do hope you paint yourself even if you missed Karin's challenge - it is hard but we're a nice cheap model, always there when needed. :) Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate the feedback!
