Umbrella Girls - WIP

This portrait is a work in progress (detail at top). These are our daughters about 19 years ago. I have been looking at Dana Cooper's and Paula Villanova's beautiful portraits. They are both amazing, inspiring painters. 16 x 20 oil on canvas, NFS.

Camille, you really flatter me with your post, but what I see in you work in progress is the love that you have for these girls. It has a very Renoir feel to it.
This painting is so, so close to finished...I love it. I would say you are fully submerged!

This is just a lovely painting so far. I really admire paintings done from photos like this, and you have so far really captured the moment.

Thank you both SO much, Dana and Sumabokemo (welcome!). I'm so excited to have gotten past my first experience painting children. I think/hope that I can only get better and so far I'm enjoying it a lot!

Wow, thanks Camille but you're a pretty amazing painter yourself. I absolutely love that you have your own unique, personal style and an enviable level of creativity. This is a touching painting and I love that you post your WIPs....I think it's very exciting to watch the progress of a painting. Your daughters will treasure this painting, sure, because they are featured, but also because it's so cool!

Camille, this is just great. I love the contrast between the girls, the little one is content with big sister taking care of her. Lovely painting style...looking forward to seeing this finished. I love seeing works in progress, we all have a different approach and I like that you share yours.

You have no idea how helpful to me your comments are. I see so many things about all my paintings that I feel iffy about ('about which I feel iffy,' for grammarians)... but I'm a kinesthetic learner and that's how I improve -- stumbling my way through what I feel works and what doesn't. But it feels super to hear that I have a style that is coming through. To me, it looks like my style is all over the map, but I'm glad others can see a consistent vision. That's what I want! Thanks again, you guys.

This painting is coming along beautifully and I am looking forward to seeing what you do next. Even with vibrant colours you have such gentle brushwork which works so well with your choice of subjects. And thank you for visiting and leaving me such a soul inspiring comment... you've sussed me out girl:) r.

Aww, such sweethearts! To me, this painting has a very Mary Cassatt feel to it. I can't wait to see what you'll do with it next!

Camille, the composition is lovely--your youngest looks perfectly confident in her big sister! Great work. Just so you know, I've left a Kreative Blogger award for you on my site--no biggie if you don't have time to do it, I just think these things are motivating and fun to pay forward! Have a good weekend.

Hello Camille
This is a very good picture so far.
You have captured the characters of these children very well already. Very tenderly painted.
Kind Regards

Well good grief...I KNOW I left a comment on this. ???

Isn't it shocking how quickly they grow up? Just love this sweet composition. The younger girl is so precious. I really like your use of black in this. Can't wait to see the finished work and the details of your older daughter!

Hey Camille, I don't know if you still watch cartoons but Disney and Pixar made an animation filmed called WALL•E. In this movie the character MO makes this noise that sounds like "woe woe woe". Thats what I heard in my mind when I saw the detail of this masterpiece.

Camille, every great painting starts with a great reference or idea, and I love the way this is shaping up. Is this from a photo you took 19 years ago? If so, amazing photo with a couple of beautiful young ladies.

Thank you, everyone! I haven't been able to touch this in over two weeks...girls home from college and I'm distracted with re-org activities, firstborn's college graduation, one off to ranger at a camp and one off to France soon...but hope to get back to this any day now... after I finish cleaning out closets...

Vern, welcome back to the blogosphere! Yes, this is from a photo of them that long ago, I can't remember which one of us took it but it has been a favorite all this time.

Happy painting to everybody and thanks for visiting!

Camille, Thanks for the comment on my blog. I am happy you left it as I now have found yours! This is a beautiful painting and I know from how much fun it is to paint your grown up children from old family photos. You will cherish this more and more each year!

By the way, I am entranced by your other paintings also.
