B&W&Red Self Portrait Tweaked

I decided I needed some darker values so I decided to darken my shirt. While I was at it I shortened and hopefully softened the neck. And I made a few tiny changes in the face that probably no one will notice. So I hope I made it look a little better. Same 16 x 16 oil on board as below. And I see what Vern was talking about... that upper right corner keeps photographing as ochre-y. But it's just the same warm red with a touch of black, Scout's honor, guys and gals!

Camille, I like what you did to the shirt, it shows more form with the light and shadows...looks great!

That is better! Guess that's why photographers like a dark neutral colored shirt. It really brings more color to the face.

(I tweaked mine a bit this morning, too.)

I love the shirt and shortened neck! They are just what the painting needed. It was great before and now it's UBER great.

I have to agree with Madeline's last line. I love the deeper red to the background too!

Red was a brilliant idea! Nice and original portrait, Camille!

It makes the contrast, an element the eyes seem to savor.

Thanks for the feedback -- I'm still making small changes to the neck and shirt but will keep it mostly like it is now.

Hi Camille. First, great self-portrait! And I like your changes in version 2 - I think the darker shirt makes the eyes pop...even more expressive. Thanks for visiting my blog Camille - I've admired your work for awhile.

Camille, As artists, we know a painting is never finished - merely stopped. It's knowing when to stop that's the key. Brava for pushing the piece to greater heights.
